Best holiday destinations for March

1. OAHU, HAWAII IN MARCH

Oahu is among the best places to travel in March USA

The island of Oahu in Hawaii is beautiful and accessible, with direct flights to the Honolulu International Airport from many cities in the United States.

March is one of the best months to visit Hawaii because it’s less busy than the summer months and slightly less rainy than the winter months. The weather during this time is nice, and temperatures are from 64 to 78 F (18 to 25 C). As a bonus, this is also one of the months when you can see whales around the coast of Oahu.

There are many amazing hikes and sightseeing activities in Oahu Hawaii to enjoy year-round. The island has nice white sand beaches all over, with two best being Lanikai Beach (on the windward side) and Sunset Beach (on the north shore).

A great hotel option near the main tourist area of Oahu is Halekulani, which is located on Waikiki Beach in Waikiki. If you want to see a quieter and less touristy side of the island, drive up to the north shore! Even though there’s no accommodation, the north shore is worth a visit to enjoy the surfing and laidback feel compared to other parts of the island.

Some of the best north shore beaches in Oahu to visit include Laniakea and Sunset Beach, which are both very high quality. Sunset Beach is known for its amazing sunsets (of course), and you can often see turtles relaxing on the beach at Laniakea.

2. BIG SUR IN MARCH FOR SPRING BLOSSOMS AND THE GREY WHALES WATCHING

What to do in Big Sur? Visit the Jade Cove Beach in Big Sur
Jade Cove Beach in Big Sur

Big Sur is one of the most spectacular places to visit in the USA.

However, Big Sur is among the best places to travel in March for the impressive grey whale migration and nature blossoming after a cold and rainy winter.

Sensational Big Sur covers a 90-mile (144 km) long Pacific Ocean coastline from Carmel-by-the Sea to San Simeon in California.

Not many places in the US can compare to the landscapes, wilderness, and wildlife of Big Sur. Besides that, Big Sur is famous as one of the most scenic routes in the world. It is a popular section of the scenic San Francisco to Los Angeles road trip.

Big Sur is not only about the famous Bixby BridgeMcWay Falls, and Pfeiffer Beach. Big Sur has many parks, hiking trails, beaches, scuba diving spots, streams, meadows, rivers, waterfalls, and forests, that make this part of California a top destination in the US for outdoor lovers.

Check out the trails of Point Lobos Natural Reserve (like Carmel Meadow Trail, North Shore Trail, and Cypress Grove Trail) or oceanfront trails of Garrapata State Park and see sea lions, sea otters, harbor seals, and gray whales from Soberanes Point. Exploring Big Sur parks like Andrew Molera State Park and Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park, and Limekiln State Park are among the best things to do in Big Sur, California.

Me in Big Sur

If you visit Big Sur in March, you will most likely see the grey whale migration. Gray whales migrate from Alaska to Mexico from December to early February, and then they start returning from Mexico to Alaska with their newborns. March is a great time to witness a sensational grey whale migration along the Big Sur coast in good weather. Summer in Big Sur is foggy, and the rainy season in Bug Sur goes from December to February. Therefore, chilly spring is a good time for visiting Big Sur. Temperatures in Big Sur in March go from a high of 59°F (15°C) to a low of 50°F (10°C). Big Sur’s nature awakes in March after a rainy and cold winter and there are no summer fogs.

If you are looking for a memorable stay in Big Sur, check out 5-star Ventana Big Sur. It is an iconic luxury resort in Big Sur. It has matchless oceanfront suites with spectacular Pacific Ocean views. But rental cabins in Big Sur or Big Sur glamping sites are also great options!

Monterey Regional (MRY) (22 mi) is the closest airport to Big Sur. San Jose (SJC) (75.67 mi), San Luis Obispo County (SBP) (96.69 mi), and San Francisco (SFO) (98.47 mi) are close to Big Sur too.

3. SAGUARO NATIONAL PARK IN MARCH

Saguaro Np is among the best places to travel in March in the USA
Photo credit: Around the World with Me

One of the best places to celebrate the end of winter in the United States is Saguaro National Park in southern Arizona.

Located right outside of Tucson, the park is known for its massive groves of saguaro cacti and rugged mountains covered in sharp desert vegetation. This underrated national park holds the most spectacular collection of saguaro cacti in the world.

The average high in March is about 76 F (24 C) with overnight lows around 46 F (8 C). And since it’s the desert, the air is dry. This is what is known as literally perfect hiking weather and it’s the best time to visit the park since in the summer, daytime highs are well over 100 degrees and the heat can be seriously dangerous and even life-threatening. The pleasant late winter / early spring weather also makes driving the scenic park roads a more enjoyable experience.

The number one thing to do in Saguaro National Park is to get out on the trails and hike. One such hike great for the winter is the Wasson Peak hike on the west side of the park. Catching a desert sunset is also another must-do in the park. The desert sun makes for spectacular sunsets across the cactus-clad valleys.

The park is split into two separate sections separated by the city of Tucson, making it one of the most accessible parks in the US.
From Tucson International Airport it’s barely a 30-minute drive to the west entrance of the park and less than 30 minutes to the east entrance. Rental cars are cheap and plentiful from Tucson International. With the city being so close, there are unlimited lodging options for your visit. There are no developed campgrounds in the park, but if you want to camp Gilbert Ray Campground in nearby Tucson Mountain Park is your best option. There’s nothing like a desert sunrise from a beautiful campsite in the mountains.  Or, if you prefer hotel stays, check out the 4-star Graduate Tucson in Tuscan. The hotel is only a 20-ish min drive from the park!

4. MOAB IN MARCH

Moab, Utah is among the best places to travel in March in the USA
Arches NP near Moab in Utah

Moab, Utah, is considered the adventure capital if you are in the United States, and visiting in March is a great idea.

March is a great time to visit because you can avoid the extremely hot weather and enjoy all of the fun things to do in Moab in some of the best temperatures you will find.

There are many things that make Moab great. You can visit two beautiful national parks, Canyonlands National Park and Arches National Park.
Arches NP is famous for its beautiful arches throughout the park and is home to the famous Delicate Arch. Canyonlands NP is great for beautiful views of the Colorado River and the deep canyon below.

Not only does Moab have two national parks a short drive away, but it is also home to many extreme sports like mountain biking, rock climbing, and off-road driving. Moab is full of trails dedicated to each of these adventurous activities and is full of guides and tours, making them accessible to everyone if you don’t have your own gear or off-road vehicle.

The average high in March is around 55 F (13 C), but it is not uncommon to see temperatures above 70 F (21 C). This is because the temperature at the beginning of March can be drastically different than the temperatures towards the end of March. The later in March you travel to, the warmer it will be, but it will also start to get more crowded.

The closest large airport is Salt Lake City Airport, which is about 3 hours and 45 minutes away from the city of Moab. There are a lot of great options for where to stay. They range from budget hotels to beautiful resort-style accommodations. A more moderate but great-value option would be the Hyatt Place Moab.

5. BIG ISLAND OF HAWAII IN MARCH

Big island of Hawaii is among the best places to travel in March in the USA

Hawaii needs no introduction, though most people travel to Oahu or Maui, which can make the islands feel crowded.

Less famous and developed, Big Island is, however, a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts.

Traveling to Big Island in March is ideal if you want to get away from the crowd while still enjoying the warm weather. The shoulder month makes it the perfect time to explore what the island offers.

Indeed, the top things to do on the Big Island of Hawaii include scuba-diving with giant manta rays, hiking around the Volcanoes National Park, going on an open-door helicopter ride to take one erupting volcanoes and waterfalls, driving one of the several scenic roads, learning the island’s history at the Puuhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park, kayaking in Kealakekua Bay, swimming at the Punalu’u Black Sand Beach, or watching the stars from the Mauna Koa.

The weather in March is usually mild, featuring sunny days with temperatures averaging in the 70s °F (20s °C).

You can fly to either Kona International Airport or Hilo International Airport.
Rent a car at Kona International Airport, or rent a car at Hilo International Airport, to enjoy total flexibility during your Big Island trip at the best.

Both cities offer a wide range of accommodations for all budgets and service levels, from campgrounds and hostels to luxury resorts.
However, consider staying at the tropical paradise of Kona Coast Resort in Kailua-Kona, and the fabulous Hilo Bay Oceanfront Bed and Breakfast in Hilo.

6. ZION NATIONAL PARK IN MARCH

The Angel’s Landing trail in Zion NP

Zion National Park is one of the most iconic national parks in the United States!

Located in Southern Utah, it is surrounded by an area of outdoor beauty. Visiting in the spring provides travelers an opportunity to enjoy mild weather with fewer crowds.

March on average sees a high of 56 F (13 C) and a low of 30 F (-1 C).  Light snow and rain are not uncommon during this transitional time of year.

Fly into McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas and rent a car for 2 hours 50 minute drive into Zion National Park.

Many visitors make the trip out to Zion National Park to complete one of its most famous hikes, The Narrows or Angel’s Landing.

Angel’s Landing has cracked down on its safety requirements, and it requires a permit to climbThe Narrows is a fun hike unlike any other. Plan to hike upstream wading through water!  Be sure to rent a neoprene wetsuit in Springdale prior to completing your hike in order to stay safe.  Water temperatures can be freezing and it will be essential that you are bundled up accordingly to stay safe.

7. MAUI IN MARCH FOR THE HUMPBACK WHALES SEASON

Maui is among the best places to travel in March USA

Whether you want to be a beach bum or go on an epic adventure, Maui is an excellent choice for travelers.

March is a fantastic time to visit Maui as it squarely falls within the peak season to see humpback whales here. Every year, over 10,000 humpback whales migrate from the chilly Arctic waters to the warm lagoons of Maui to breed and raise their young. So book a seat on any of the best whale-watching tours in Maui and watch these school bus-sized creatures leap out of and crash into the Pacific Ocean.

Another bucket list activity, while you’re on the island, is driving along the Road to Hana, a 65-mile route that winds its way through the luscious eastern side of the island, passing impossibly green rainforests, countless waterfalls, and jaw-dropping ocean views. Regardless of what kind of adventure you’re looking for that day, from hiking through a bamboo forest to relaxing on a black sand beach, you can find it along this incredible road.

Be sure to carve out time to visit Haleakala National Park, which is, in part, located on the summit and slopes of the world’s tallest dormant volcano. You can watch the sunrise above the clouds here (if you’re lucky enough to snag a highly coveted permit) and explore incredible hiking trails that take you around and even down into the volcano’s crater.

The weather in Maui in March is perfect for exploring this tropical paradise, with highs in the low 80s (around 27 C). While you’ll likely experience a handful of rainy days here, the Hawaiian Islands are all made up of microclimates– so if you happen to be experiencing rain in one part of the island, simply drive 20, or so minutes away and you’ll probably find sunshine!

To reach the island, fly into Kahului Airport on the eastern side. From here, one of the most popular places to stay for travelers is Lahaina on the western side, due to its proximity to snorkeling and whale-watching cruises and some of the best beaches on Maui.
The Westin Maui Resort and Spa is an excellent option, thanks to its central location to downtown Lahaina and incredible amenities (including 4 outdoor pools!).

The Columbia River Gorge is among the best palces to visit in March USA

Oregon is famous for its spectacular green landscapes, lush forests, stunning lakes, and pretty Oregon coastal towns. Oregon is a must-visit for outdoor enthusiasts.

Located in the very northern half of Oregon, along the Columbia River, is the state’s largest city, Portland.
While often known for being the “Weird City,” there’s much more to it, especially during the spring.

The best way to arrive in Portland is to fly into the Portland International Airport (PDX) and then rent a car to get around.

Colorful cherry blossom trees, fascinating hikes, and vibrant greenery are a few of the best reasons to visit Portland during the spring months.

Enjoy the blossoms along Tom McCall Waterfront Park, where you can walk right along the river. Then head to Hoyt Arboretum to see the foliage at its brightest, thanks to the winter rain. And just 30 minutes away, you’ll find the Columbia River Gorge, home to some of the most beautiful hikes and wildflowers in the state.

On the Oregon side of the Columbia River, embark on hikes to see all sorts of waterfalls, including the tallest in the state. And on the Washington side, head out to Dog Mountain or Coyote Wall to see blooming purple and yellow wildflowers.

While you’re in the city of Portland, other fun activities include eating at a few of the popular food trucks, thrift shopping at House of Vintage, and grabbing donuts at Voodoo Donuts.

While it isn’t the warmest city, the weather isn’t terrible during this time of year, with an average high of 56° F (13° C).

When you’re ready to call it a night, book a stay at Hotel Lucia, a beautiful boutique hotel in downtown Portland.

Visiting Death Valley in March means sightseeing the popular sites in Death Valley (like the Zabriskie viewpoint, the Dantes Viewpoint, Badwater Basin, Devil’s Golf Course, and Artist’s Palette) with perfect weather. 11. NORTHERN OREGON COAST IN MARCH FOR THE PRIME WHALE-WATCHING SEASON

Northern Oregon Coast is among the best places to travel in March USA

As native Oregonians know, March is a great time to visit the Northern Oregon Coast—the area from Newport north to Astoria.

The coast can be wild or mild in March, but no matter the weather, it’s a great time to visit. Expect temps in the mid-50s / mid-60s (about 10 C/15 C) — but can vary from stormy and rainy to mild and sunny. Best of all, March is prime whale watching season as thousands of whales make their way north to Alaska.

Fly into Portland and rent a car for the 2-ish hour drive to the coast. You can choose one of the destinations below and explore from there or make a loop road trip—Portland to Newport, north along the coast to Astoria, and inland along the Columbia River pack to PDX.

Oregon Coast in March highlights, South to North:

Newport is known for its seafood restaurants, scenic bridge over the Yaquina River, and the cool old town vibes at Historic Nye Beach. On a rainy day, visit the Oregon Coast Aquarium, and after the storm search for agates at Agate Beach. Bust out your cameras to photograph Yaquina Head lighthouse or better yet, take a lighthouse tour. The Yaquina Head Lighthouse is also a great place to spot migrating gray whales. Cuddle up with a good book in one of the author-themed rooms at the Sylvia Beach Hotel and be sure to sign up for a family-style dinner and break bread over a game of two truths and a lie with other guests.

As you head north, take the Three Capes Scenic Loop drive and stop at Cape Lookout State Park to stroll the beach or hike the steep Cape Lookout Trail for sweeping ocean views. Look for the trained volunteers at Cape Meares Lighthouse to help you spot whales.

A bit inland, but on 101, Tillamook is home to the famous Tillamook Cheese Factory. Stop in for a tour, free samples, a scoop of ice cream, or lunch.

The next stop is Cannon Beach/Seaside, the closest beach town to Portland. At low tide, go tide-pooling at Haystack Rock, and visit some art galleries while in town. If you have kids, (or heck, even if you don’t) visit the Funland Seaside Arcade and take a hike or horseback ride in Ecola State Park.

Astoria is the northern tip of Oregon and at nearby Fort Stevens State Park, you can visit a shipwreck or go clamming on the Oregon coast if the tide is low. Movie fans will want to check out the Oregon Film Museum and spots on the set of The Goonies movie. Get a workout by climbing to the top of the Astoria Tower. Grab a bit and a brew at the Astoria Brewing Company and spend the night at Cannery Pier Hotel & Spa

Lower Antelope Canyon in Arizona © World Travel Connector

Page, Arizona is located in northern Arizona and is home to some pretty incredible natural wonders such as Antelope Canyon and Horseshoe Bend.

Page is a great place to visit in March because this is when the temperatures start warming up but the crowds aren’t too bad yet. It’s also a great time to visit Antelope Canyon because the famous light beams become visible in mid-March.  Page is one of the best spring break destinations.

Besides visiting Antelope Canyon, there are some other incredible things to do in Page like checking out Horseshoe Bend, exploring a lesser-known slot canyon like Canyon X or Secret Antelope Canyon, or going kayaking or boat riding on Lake Powell. Page, Antelope Canyon, Horseshoe Bend, and Lake Powel are among the best places to travel in March in the USA.

The weather in March is around 60° F (15° C) during the day and there is a slight chance of rain. There is an airport located in Page, but it can be rather expensive to fly into. 13. CATALINA ISLAND IN MARCH

Catalina island is among the best places to travel in March USA

One of the best places to visit in the US in March includes sunny, Southern California.

When the rest of the country is gray and gloomy, you can get sunshine and pretty comfortable weather still in Southern California including one of the best island escapes in the United States, Catalina Island!

Catalina Island is the perfect weekend getaway in March because the weather is still very comfortable and there are fewer crowds than in the peak summer season, so you can enjoy the charm and the beauty of the island without the crowds. Not to mention, you might even get a chance to see the wildflowers in bloom and take advantage of a hike or tour of the interior of the island – which is one of the best things to do on Catalina Island.

The weather in March averages around 60F (15C) during the day and 45F (7C) at night. When it’s a sunny day, it’s easy to wear a T-shirt or just a light jacket which is perfect weather for taking a comfortable hike, walking in the botanical gardens, or scooting around the island on a golf cart!

The easiest way to get to Catalina Island is either flying into LAX in Los Angeles or SNA airport in Orange County. From the airport, you can commute to Long Island (from Los Angeles) or Newport Beach (from Orange County) to catch the ferry to Catalina Island. You also have the option to take a helicopter from Orange County to Catalina Island if you prefer to do everything by air, this will be a more costly way of getting there though.

Once you’re on the island you can’t go wrong with any of the hotels, one that is extra special is Aurora Hotel located on a hill. This hotel has a great view because of its location and an awesome outdoor deck on the rooftop you can enjoy a sunset with a glass of California wine!

14. DRY TORTUGAS NATIONAL PARK, FL IN MARCH

Dry Tortugas NP is among the best places to travel in March USA
Photo credit: Victoria of Florida Trippers

One of the best places to visit in the USA in March is Dry Tortugas National Park. After all, this natural oasis occupies 100 square miles of land that sits 70 miles west of Key West.

In fact, seven different islands can be found within the bounds of the park, as well as stunning coral reefs, beautiful beaches (on Garden Key), the historic Fort Jefferson, and a charming lighthouse (on Loggerhead Key).

March is a great time to visit since it’s shoulder season. Therefore, you’ll have the place all to yourself and can avoid the intense heat and humidity of the summer

After all, daily highs reach 75°F (24°C) while daily lows only go down to 72°F (22°C). Therefore, the weather is quite comfortable and perfect for doing things like heading to Loggerhead Reef and exploring the Windjammer Wreck there from 1875.

You could also head to Bush Key to watch the Sooty Terns or go for a swim in the calm waters of South Swim Beach. Just be sure to bring waterproof gear since it can rain up to five days per month.

Also, because of the park’s remote location, it can only be visited by ferry or seaplane.

Personally, we like taking the Yankee Freedom III ferry since tickets are $190.00 per person and include both breakfast and lunch.

So, if you want to visit, just fly into Key West International Airport and then board the ferry upon arrival in Key West on the Dry Tortugas National Park Day Trip by Catamaran from Key West.

You can also check into a room at the Courtyard by Marriott Key West Waterfront since this lovely  3-star hotel is well-located and has a spacious outdoor pool.

PS: Everglades is another great Florida national park and one of the best national parks to visit in March. Besides that, visiting Everglades National Park is among the best things to do in Southwest Florida.

Such as shopping in Downtown Napa, hiking one of the scenic trails nearby, renting a kayak to cruise along the Napa Valley River, or having a relaxing spa day at one of the many 5-star resorts in Napa Valley.

The weather in Napa Valley in March is mostly sunny days with an average high of 64° F (18°C) and an average low of 40° F (4°C). Nights get chilly as they dip into the mid-40s, so be prepared with warmer clothes and a jacket.

There are two airports near Napa Valley, either San Francisco International or Oakland International Airport. It is about an hour and a half drive from the airport to Napa Valley. The best way to get there would be to rent a car or book a transfer in advance.

The Meritage Resort & Spa is a great place to stay in Napa Valley. The grounds there are gorgeous. It is surrounded by acres of vineyards. The resort is a short drive to many of the restaurants and shops in Downtown Napa. Also, the hotel offers numerous luxurious amenities for a relaxing and incredible stay in Napa Valley.

Photo credit: Laura of Wine Travelista

Washington, D.C. is known best as the capital of the United States.

But it’s also home to great cultural attractions, art, food, and more. March is one of the best times to visit because you can catch the annual Cherry Blossom Festival

Toward the end of March, thousands of cherry blossoms bloom throughout the city. These trees, a gift of friendship from the People of Japan in 1912, are celebrated with 3 weeks’ worth of events, including a parade, fireworks, and concerts

The best place to see the cherry blossoms is at the monuments around the Tidal Basin. From there it’s an easy walk to explore D.C.’s other famous monuments and the National Mall.

For more botanical bliss, stop by the free National Botanic Garden. It’s the oldest botanical garden in the U.S. And the 10-room conservatory greenhouse is open to visitors year-round.

D.C. is also a museum-lovers paradise. The Smithsonian Institution alone has 17 museums and galleries throughout the city. The best part is that they’re all free!

Explore the world of flight at the Air and Space Museum. See the original Star-Spangled Banner at the American History Museum. And ogle over the Hope Diamond at the Natural History Museum.

For art enthusiasts, there are several Smithsonian art museums too. But another option off the beaten path is the Kreeger Museum. It contains a large collection of impressionist art, including Monet, Degas, and Picasso.

If you’re a wine lover, don’t miss taking a day trip to go wine tasting at wineries in Northern Virginia. Thomas Jefferson was one of the first to attempt (and fail) winemaking in Virginia. But today, the state is on the rise as one of the United States’ up-and-coming wine regions.

March in New York City is an easier time to get a great deal on a hotel and enjoy some of the city’s best attractions without the larger crowds you’ll find at other times of the year.

On average March is 48 F (9 C) during the day and 36F (2 C). So you’ll want to wear comfortable layers especially if you plan on enjoying any activities near the water like crossing the Brooklyn Bridge or walking through Midtown as the skyscrapers can create a wind tunnel that can be chilly if you’re not dressed properly. It’s almost smart to check for rain or bring a rain jacket – those wind tunnels can wreak havoc on umbrellas!

Back to the fun, in March you can celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, the country’s largest population of Irish-Americans and the city is full of celebrations including the annual parade that dates back to 1762 as well as cultural events hosted by the Irish Arts Center.

Another great March activity in New York City is the annual Macy’s Flower Show towards the end of the month. This two-week-long flower festival takes over the window displays outside Macy’s Herald Square and is a sight to behold!

To get to New York City you can commute into Manhattan from JFK, LGA, or EWR airports. If it’s your first time visiting and checking out all the best things to do in NYC, stay in Midtown or near it. Motto by Hilton Chelsea is not only an excellent property but also a great location for seeing the best sites in the city plus hitting up the best events happening in March.
